I am a 52 year old divorced mother of two grown children and 3 going on 4 beautiful granddaughters.
I have written all my life for myself, family and friends. Making a living always got in the way of my dream to be a writer.
Now I find myself unemployed and able to work at writing; the trick I have discovered is finding a market for my work. A publisher would be nice too. Since I hadn't written in years and decided that writing is what I truly want to do. Substance abuse is my interest as it has deeply affected my family.
A counselor suggested I go to an N A meeting and write an essay. I went to the meeting came home got out pen and paper and didn't know where to start! I did however start, I put some thoughts on paper and more thoughts and wondered how to put it together; then I heard a voice in my head I'll call God tell me ever so adamantly "Just write it"! The word just flowed onto the paper and this is how it turned out.
ADDICTION
I LISTENED TO EACH PERSON IN THE ROOM SHARE THEIR LIFE STORY
EACH ONE STRUGGLED THROUGH DRUG USE TO DISCOVER NO GUTS NO GLORY
AS NEWCOMERS WE SAT THERE NUMB, OUR SPIRITS BEAT AND BROKEN
WE SAID WE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO FIX OURSELVES NO TRUER WORDS WERE EVER SPOKEN
YEARS OF CHASING THAT HIGH, WHATEVER THE DRUG OF CHOICE
LEFT US SPENT AND DEFEATED, WE COULDN'T FIND OUR VOICE
OUR LIVES WERE FULL OF UGLY LIES, THOUGHTS AND DECEPTION
BOTTOM CAME WE HIT IT HARD AND LOOKED UP FOR REDEMPTION
SOMETHING MADE US SAY ENOUGH IT'S TIME TO TURN MY LIFE AROUND
TIME TO EMBRACE LIFE ON ITS TERMS AND LIVE IT HONOR BOUND
FOR WHO WE'VE WRONGED, FOR WHAT WE'VE DONE, OURSELVES WE MUST FORGIVE
TO REALIZE ONE DAY AT A TIME IS OURS TO CALMLY LIVE
RECOVERY IS TO WATCH ONE DAY TURN INTO 30 AS WE FACE OUR FEARS
THEN CONQUER EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM YEAR AFTER SOBER YEAR

Curtis is a tattoo artist, a father of three girls, a son, a brother, and my daughter Amy's soul mate. He is also an addict, a car jacker, a liar and a thief. He is personable, a hard worker, a friend and an enemy. He had been in prison twice; when he got out the second time he was thirty years old. He said he wanted a life for his family; he wanted to be part of his family. He wanted his parents to be proud of him. Curt stayed with his mom and before long he was back in the hood, he called me from his hospital bed he had been stabbed in the chest. His mother thought she had lost him. When...
