About me - Louis Whitehead

About me

I'm a freelance writer, photographer, and musician currently living in South Dakota. Freelancing is an activity I've enjoyed for more than 10 years, and I savor the flexibility it affords.

My educational background is primarily in journalism; I hold bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism from South Dakota State University. Including and beyond formal education, I've been fortunate to be a student of many subjects through the years. Among the subjects that interest me the most are cars, computers and technology, travel, music, and Aboriginal/First Nations/American Indian people, cultures, and issues.

Below is a partial list of publications/media outlets that have used articles I've written and/or photos I've taken:

"Brookings Register"
"Sioux Falls Argus Leader"
"Sioux Falls Business Journal"
"Dakota/Lakota Journal"
"Indian Country Today"
"Roundel"
"National Native News" (radio)
"Well Nations"
"Ikce Wicasta"
"Tri-State Livestock News"

In the past I have been an intern with the Ag/Bio Communications Unit of the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service. And I was once the education reporter for the "Brookings Register." I currently work as an event coordinator and Web designer for South Dakota State University's Office for Diversity Enhancement and Honors College and the South Dakota Council on World Affairs.

To date I have published three books and am currently working on a fourth. "An Era of Free Native American Press," published in 2005; "Ethel Austin Martin: One Brave Lady" was published in 2006; and "Living Through Leukemia: A Journey to Health" was published in 2007.

Human Connections They are the ties that bind us together To one another They stretch across the ether of time and space and bridge the chasms of race, color, and creed From generation to generation hey link us hand in hand shoulder to shoulder face to face and back to back They make strangers into friends and friends into brothers and sisters With each new bridge we build our worlds expand, and yet grow smaller They expand as we welcome others into our circles and shrink as we learn truly learn that we are all part of one family
