She smiles off into the distance, but I'm right here by her side. I remember when she used to look right at me; could see me. Her eyes have faded, but as I grow into adulthood, the space between us is shortened and she sees me more clearly. She nods and smiles at something she has just related to me. Her failed sight allows me to look at her. Really look at her, the way you can't ever look at people who can look right back. No, they would be too self conscious. I can gaze at my Grandmother freely, memorize every crinkle in her skin and hope that I can hold onto this moment. I think back to...
