About me - Joni Spicer

About me

People-watching has been a hobby since I was too young to know better and ended up in on our kitchen floor at the age of 6, for screwing up my face in such a manner, while daydreaming, my father knocked me off my chair, thinking what he termed a "Go TO H..." look was directed at him!

I have a creative side that sometimes takes on a life or will of its own: cooking, sewing, baking, dancing, poetry, writing, sketching, interior design, floral arrangement and other artistic endeavors.

I was not intended to be a professional woman, but life has its little jokes it likes to play, and there I was, on my own at an older age than one generally starts out on their own path, without an inkling of what I could do much less wanted to do when I grew up. Each job found me struggling to find my niche.

Q:What can I do? A:Anything I set my mind to, but nothing I'm "qualified" on paper to do. So, as I answered the switchboard, I would occupy my busy mind with poems or stories, mostly reflecting on co-workers and associates' departures or events, resulting in being told "I missed my calling; was in the wrong business and should work for a greeting card company or publish a book." Here I am!

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Writing, dancing, teaching, family - not in that order

I know too much about ...

everything! very opinionated, jack of all trades, master of none

My parents always told me ...

your mouth will get you into trouble! you do so many good things and ruin it by saying the wrong thing.

My childhood ambition ...

to be a dancer, a teacher, a mother and a lady just like my mother

My favorite memory ...

opening the door, hearing my mother's singing along with the radio, as she lovingly sewed clothes for my sisters and me, in the basement, with freshly baked coffee cakes and homemade bread loves, still warm from the oven, on a wintry day

Why I write ...

I can't help myself; it just has to come out!

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

My grandson of 17 months, PBS kids shows, Oprah

My first job ...

babysitting followed by office clerk at a Jewish Furniture Company in a nasty, cluttered, disorganized mess, and quitting within weeks, due to a connection with a home break-in and the son of the owner.

My best moment ...

When two dreams accidentally collided and teaching dance and performing were one.

My inspiration ...

My mother's love, generosity. selflessness helping people who may not have liked her and weren't even nice to her nor liked her and the love of my life who stood up for his beliefs and trusted our legal system to the point of being imprisoned for fighting for his rights, when he could have accepted a plea bargain for a year's suspended sentence and in the end, harbored no ill will nor hatred towards those who chose to purjor themselves to gain from his plight..
