About me - S. Tyler Lawson

About me

My writing career began with my first story, titled "How The Monkeys Got Their Long Arms". It was my eleventh year on the planet and only weeks beyond the birthday that led to the awakening of this passion by Ray Bradbury's book "S is for Space".

I doubt my Grandfather, the purveyor of the book, knew of my first grade trauma instigated by the mandatory reading (out loud) of the chronicles of Dick and Jane. I spoke an oath, that day, to never read again.

I suffered lapses under the allure of such works as Curious George and Dr. Seuss, but steadfastly eschewed any other literature, especially if void of pictures. I upheld this embargo until seduced by the dust jacket of Mr. Bradbury's novel. The book was already a gem because of its source, but became precious beyond all the jewels of the cosmos once the colorful prose impinged its magic upon my imagination.

The reason I didn't pursue writing as a career is couched in the familial litany: "You can't make a living in the arts." So I followed the path of technology and engineering until finally, upon a second awakening brought on by "middle age", I embraced what is truly my primary passion, the fruit of which is being revealed here (as well as there).

I was sitting on a mountain ledge high in the foothills near Mount Whitney musing upon the joyful, ecstatic feeling permeating my chest and lighting up my heart. Then it hit me it was the same feeling as falling in love. I had puzzled over this since the day this feeling first erupted within me from out of nowhere, while sitting doing nothing. What was this feeling? It was so familiar, yet I couldn't place it perhaps because it occurred outside of the usual context. The recognition stunned me so simple, so mundane, yet so incredibly wonderful. But, who or what was I "in love" with? Rewind ...
