About me - Roy Blokker

About me

I was born in the Netherlands in 1950. My parents immigrated to the United States when I was two. Much of my family remains in Holland.

I graduated from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1971 with a BA in History. Due to my father's illness I did not go to graduate school right away, and then life intervened. I married in 1974 and have spent the better part of the ensuing years raising a family and working for the United States Postal Service.

In 1979 I published a book, "The Music of Dmitri Shostakovich: The Symphonies." Over the years I have had a few poems and articles published in "Mother's Manual," "The Scratch Sheet," "Ideals" and "Highlights For Children."  My first published novel, "AMBER WAVES," about people, often mistaken for gods, who doi not die, coping in a world where people do, is now available to download on Kindle or your PC through a free Kindle app.

Writing is my passion, as important to me as breathing. I also love to read and to learn from others.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

learning and laughing and of course, writing

I know too much about ...

useless information - I know just enough to get in trouble!

My childhood ambition ...

to become Santa Claus. I'm stull working on it.

Why I write ...

Is there anything else?

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

Cornelia Funke's Inkheart Trilogy has my attention and I'm always looking for new material on the Dutch Golden Age.

My best moment ...

Too many to single out one: my wedding day, the birth of my first son, the birth of my second son, the day we finalized the adoption of our daughters, the moment I found my name mentioned in the line notes for a CD recording of Shostakovich's 10th.

My inspiration ...

History. Not dates and places and factoids, but the people, their stories, especially my own family.

The plow man is happy. The snow is falling And he has work. He is as prepared As a surgeon scrubbing up, As ready as the watchman Just begun his shift. And he does magic Making snow give way So I can get home.
