Perhaps reflection builds ourselves inside out, and helps us find our "true self". That is what I've found. Experience has brought me to the conclusion that when my conscious-self beckons an answer as to why I am straying away from the true intents of my heart, I usually begin to regret and reflect on my actions. The price I then pay is a repentance like act to myself. Then whatever spiritual actions I need to take to get back on the path I intended on following.
