My name is Scott Hubachek, and I am new to Helium, and to writing. Writing is something that I have always wanted to do, and I have written on my personal Blogs before, but I have never been published otherwise.
When I was in the third or fourth grade I made a small book at school, and made two or three copies that I handed out to classmates, but that was about as far as my publishing career went at that time. Several years later I fell in love with journalism, reading it and watching news on television.
I had a paper route when I was a thirteen, and one night while I was collecting payments, I overheard President Reagan doing one of his fireside chats, saying that the Soviet Union was an "Evil Empire". I remember the next morning having to read all about it before I started doing my deliveries.
When I was in my Twenties I was going to school in Tacoma, Washington, for small engine repair. As part of the course I ended up having to take an English course, which I thoroughly enjoyed. For the final exam I had to write a thesis on "Influence". Most of the people chose to write about other people that influenced them, or things that influenced them. I wrote mine on the influence of journalism on world events, such as the Berlin wall coming down, and how that influenced other people in the world to stand up for democracy in other Eastern European countries, and in China.
I did get the highest grade in the class for that assignment, and ever since then I have wanted to start a career in writing, but until now I haven't had the opportunity to do so in a meaningful way. I am looking forward to starting my writing career here on Helium, and am open to advice from seasoned writers on style and technique.
