Shaheen has been writing for Helium for nearly two years and is one of the Managers for the Business Channel. She is also a Distance Learning writer for an online University.
Born in Kenya where she obtained her BA Hons degree in Economics, Shaheen has extensive retail experience acquired from working in the family book business in Kenya and then running a retail business in the UK for several years. She has also studied accounting and is currently self employed.
Shaheen enjoys writing short stories and poetry as they appeal to her creative side. Some of her poems have been published in "VOICES" a book which is the voice of various poets from all walks of life. "VOICES" is a fundraiser for a homelessness project and can be checked out at www.uniqueeuphony.com.
In December 2008, she won the Pulitzer citizens award for an article she wrote about US responsibility towards the Iraqi refugee crisis. Issues of world poverty, water conservation and the plight of women and children in many parts of the world are areas in which she would like to awaken awareness and make a difference, no matter how small.
Shaheen says of Helium "It is a wonderful, life changing experience where I am learning all the time...let's see where this new journey takes me!
My passion is ...
My family
I know too much about ...
Never can know everything about everything
My parents always told me ...
How special I was to them
My childhood ambition ...
To help people who survive on so little in our world
My favorite memory ...
Walking on the beautiful beach in Mombasa and watching the tide come in
Why I write ...
Because my mind is so full of ideas... thoughts... hopes...dreams
What I am reading/watching/listening to ...
It changes with my mood......
My first job ...
Accounts
My best moment ...
Holding my child for the first time ... it was worth all that pain!
My inspiration ...
My father, a very special soul
So you want to see my best self Polished and preened, all defects painted over? As nice as pie, clear conscience, no hidden cover? I hate to disappoint, but the penumbra in my being Hangs like haze lingers over crystal waters Very much as intended by nature My best self consists of a malleable mould That cannot be strong, without being weak From all things bad, it is the good it does seek A voyage of human discovery At the conclude of which no earthly treasure lies in wait Just twenty one grams, no more, no less in weight Will accolade the best of my life on this earth
