I write in Northwestern Ontario, not very far from Kakabeka Falls, the "Niagara of the North", a spectacular waterfall on the Kamanistiquia River.
Writing fiction has become my favorite challenge; I focus on novels, short stories, and children's books; however, essays, articles, experimental writing, poetry and two completed full length motion picture screenplays are included in my work. Lately, Helium has become a second focal point for knowledge-based writing. It seems debate and opinion cannot be ignored either; there is always an issue to write about.
I tend not to write when I do not feel inspired. I look to
my surroundings, spirituality, faith, my family, my friends, and at times I also closely look at my exposure to the rest of humanity complete with it's foibles, eternal questions, and observable legacy.
Sometimes it is the unseen that affects one most profoundly. The soul participates and must be allowed to explore and grow. Creativity is growth.
"Self-expression is a kindness to the soul that so invests".
Writing -is self-expression of the soul, which may be denied only at the peril of one's very existence, since humanity is destined to learn, perhaps at times, the hard way when civility, decency and human kindness are pushed aside by greed, materialism, and thoughtlessness.
I have only recently started to genuinely believe that we can change the world if we try hard enough. Writing in Helium has cultivated and encouraged that thought process.
"I must tell humanity what I expect of it, for in not doing so, I must despise myself" comes to mind.
We should not feel free to complain if we sit and do nothing about it.
We must demand change, however painful at times.
Writing is a learning process, an endless observation and recording of civilization but it can also be the ultimate power of persuasion.
"The Pen is Mightier than the Sword" is relevant to this age of confusion-and effective.
Writing at times seems more demanding than playing with two character dogs or a thirty-year-old Arabian horse, quietly walking in Boreal forests, or riding quad trails; watching moose and deer, weeding the garden, prospecting for gold, and painting with dried up oils -all of which seem to take second place.
The "Muse" is not amused if ignored.
Writing also challenges the time required for other hobbies, playing, molding in clay, creating ceramics or working on an old coal forge to bend iron. House renovations. Going green with a Geothermal heat source. Heat from the ground in Northwest Ontario where winters can be -40C is amazing. I prefer hot.
Forging iron and steel to white-hot in a bed of coals and forming it seems to parallel, in some ways, -bending the metal of the mind with the fire of inspiration.
Fanning the coals with the slightest turn of the blower invigorates the coals with ease; when working metal, a slight tap may get results, but often a heavy hammer must be used. In writing, at times the slightest incident fans inspiration to white-hot.
Sometimes it takes precedence with urgency.
Time is of the essence for all of us. "Write ON".

We are Tempted
Let us not be coy. Humanity in all of it's glory is far from innocent. To exist within the realm of the absolute purity of innocence is to be entirely free of thought; for it is said if you have thought about doing something with intent or not, you have done it, albeit only in your mind. Those who protest, perhaps protest too much.
The temptation of humanity lies within the definition of innocence, for to exist within the essence of civilization itself is to forever put forward questions of innocence or relative guilt . Tenets of religion, societal ideal...
