Regardless of the name you choose to call the country, Myanmar is truly a place of majesty and wonder. I was fortunate to visit soon after the turn of the past century and I was not surprised to see that the situation in the country was as bad as I had heard and in some cases worse than what I could have ever imagined.

Almost from the time I stepped from the plane onto the tarmac in Yangon International Airport, I began to sense a profound sadness all around me. As I swiveled my head back and forth on the ride to my relatives house in a suburb of Yangon this feeling never left me.
