Stephen King related an anecdote in his book On Writing about his motivation in his very early years. He questioned how he would feel, what his life would be like, if he waited until he was 50 to begin writing.
After a couple of decades of working in publishing, advertising, and graphic design, I realized I felt I had more to offer from the writing side. That is, I decided to work for practically no money, instead of a "real job." This is surprisingly satisfying to me, not so surprising to my writer friends.
