As a native New Mexican, the sacred Sun Symbol of the Zia Pueblo Indians is an icon that I have known since birth. The Sun Symbol is composed of a circle with four straight lines, two short on the outside and two longer on the inside, at each of the four cardinal directions. To the Indians of Zia Pueblo, four is a sacred number found in every aspect of life. The lines represent the four directions, the four seasons, four stages of the day, four stages of life, and four aspects of being (body, mind, spirit and brotherhood).
