AJ  lives near Raleigh.  She has been a pet trainer and behavior specialist for about 30 years, working with cats as well as dogs. Clients gave her the nickname, "the dog shrink", about 20 years ago.  Back then, applied behavioral science was not being used in pet training, so her methods were very unusual and when the clients realized what was happening, they invariably said, "oh, I get it, a dog shrink!". The name stuck. Now behavior science is used extensively, and AJ is thrilled to see that. finally, more people have begun to realize they can even alter their cat's behavior.

AJ has also worked at a top show kennel, as a veterinary technician, and in various other animal related jobs. She worked in the rescue trenches for about 20 years, including several years running an organization which placed hard to place animals.

Ten years ago, after a car accident while pregnant with her daughter slowed AJ down, she got a computer and began working on another interest she'd had all her life: writing. Today, AJ is a semi-retired animal behavior specialist and freelance writer, writing on such non fiction topics as pets and animals, autism, politics, green living, health and nutrition. One of her newest projects is becoming the Raleigh Autism & Parenting Examiner at Examiner.com.

My first job ...

was at the candy counter at JC Penney when I was 16.

My inspiration ...

My mother is the one I still go to for advice about everything, and look to as a role model. My daughter also inspires me - she is autistic and life is such a struggle for her, yet she seems so reliably happy. As a committed Christian, I strive always to follow the example set by my Savior and Friend, Jesus Christ.
