Elaine Grant Biography
The creative spirit has always been part of my life and I have always explored this part of my psyche. I was an elementary school teacher for over twenty years which to some people would not seem relevant to my quest for creativity when in fact it is. Teaching is an art not a science and although schools try to quantify the results it is impossible to discover by results of tests how much learning is going on. If rote is the basis of learning perhaps this is true, but a creative teacher brings to his/her students more than facts but ability to be a critical, creative thinker.
My love of writing started when I was young, at that time I wrote poetry. I continued to write poetry for many years and in the late 60's and 70's I was a member of the Dylan Thomas Poetry Club. I also participated in group poetry sessions by reading my poetry at the Unitarian Church of Jacksonville.
I continued writing and subsequently I had a weekly column in the First Coast Entertainer covering various events in the Jacksonville such as: festivals, museums, comedy concerts, restaurants, and people of interest. I received many letters of commendation from my readers. I also took my own pictures. While teaching I had a weekly news letter for students and parents to keep them abreast of events in the classroom.
Presently, I have a space on Windows Live Spaces, Teacher Confidential. On that space I write vignettes about my life in general including, stories of experiences in the classroom, my present and past life. The site also includes photographs by me and other people. I am in the process of writing a romance novel with a working title of "The Last Hurrah."
Helium is perfect for me and perhaps it will give me a wider audience.
