Take it from a guy who has spent nearly 8 years of his life playing in a band. Building fan base is of utmost importance. Playing music cost money. Unless you have a soundproof basement (or deaf neighbors) then you're going to need a place to practice. You also have figure in the cost of recording, merchandise, CD manufacturing and design, and transporting to shows. If you are going to pay for all of this out of your pocket, it can wipe out your bank account in one shot.
