About me - Lauren Haslett

About me

I'm a young but experienced writer, having worked previously at a reference publishing company in Michigan (my home state) as both an intern and a freelance writer and editor. I currently work in the External Affairs Department at a non-profit organization in New York City (my new home as of this year), where I also have the opportunity to write news-style articles on relevant social issues.

Things I love in life aside from writing include spending time with friends and family, sunshine, public radio, cooking, the smell of coffee brewing and the beautiful autumn weather in the Northeast. My goal, in addition to forwarding my writing career, is simply to learn as much as I can about as many things as possible.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

words...clearly, or i certainly wouldn't be here.

My parents always told me ...

to find my bliss, and i'm doing my best to search it out.

My childhood ambition ...

changed at least once a week, but the one that lasted the longest, aside from wanting to be a writer (of course) was to become a marine biologist...until i got to high school and realized i was actually kind of terrible at science.

Why I write ...

because it fills up my soul a little. it helps me to sort things out, to make sense of all the thoughts and ideas and fantasies running around in my mind, and basically, most of all, because i just need to.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

i just finished reading infidel by ayaan hirsi ali, which i have to say was one of the most horrifying and beautiful and inspiring stories i've read in quite some time.

My inspiration ...

is anything of beauty...the people around me, the love of my family and friends, my animals, nature, and all the great artists and creators of beauty that are out there in the world, that have been put out there for years and years before me.

And yet after all this time, all these fights, all these discussions, we are still unsure. Many of us think that being a good person means being kind, forgiving, generous and loyal. Others may think the key to goodness lies in being outspoken, independen...
