About me - Melanie Wood

About me

I am 5th generation Californian, a just-turned 61 year baby-boomer. This year my birthday present was another opportunity for starting over .. for the third or fourth time. I can't wait to see what happens next! My mother, when I said this as a child would dourly comment I was wishing my life away.

But my life(like my dreams) really seems like a movie to me. Perhaps I just lived it that way. I was born into deep poverty, subjected to various abuses of all natures, and managed to escape intact.

By the time I was 19 both parents had died and I quit college (wanted to be an archaeologist) and got a job. Married a college classmate and over the course of the next 10 years we worked and lived in San Francisco, bought a home in the suburbs, had a daughter and a son and moved to Africa: Khartoum, Sudan. (Wished then I had my degree in Archeology!)
It was there that my dream life really kicked in. My experiences in the Sudan as well as in traveling throughout our world have given me almost too much material to assimilate.

My other hobby came about unexpectedly, a sculptor I was dating reviewed some photos of Europe I'd taken and suggested I enter them in local contests. I did, and won quite a number of prizes. This led to my being hired by a local real estate magazine, which led to independent contract work for Realtors and homeowners.

At age fifty my current husband taught me to play tennis. I became competitive, and was recruited by an opposing team when my team beat them. They wanted to go to National Championships. By the time I was 53, we were at Nationals and came in 5th in the nation. At age 54 I even had the opportunity to hit a few volleys against an Aussie Pro, Mark Philloppoussis! He was trotted out to give us old goats a thrill at a resort!

A very short and stellar tennis career for me, it was. By the time I was sixty my spine was a disaster and its not too likely I'll be back to the courts. We'll see.

I have adult children, Steven and Rebecca, and two grand children, Joseph and Morgan. My Border Collie (rescue dog) is named Lulu and she may well be the most wonderful dog I've ever had. I call Lulu "Sister Mary Discipline" due to the way she keeps other dogs at the dog park from misbehaving.

Life is good and I'm blessed to have lived my dreams. And, as I said, I can't wait to see what's next!

Most of Europe has had zero or less population growth, for a very long time. European nations provide cradle to grave services for all citizens, and programs for students to learn a vocation via trade schools or university. In the United States we tolerate our rapidly expanding population, provide few services for citizens, and provide even less educational assistance. For decades, the US has listed after all of Europe and the western world regarding health, education, and welfare. Our country in 2009 still is ranked by the World Health Organization as #37 in health care, listing between C...
