I am former print reporter, television producer and writer/website producer, currently doing media consulting and marketing communications in the greater Washington, D.C. metropolitan area.
I recently came back to the U.S. after living in Beijing, China for two years. I can speak some Mandarin, but my forte is French, which I've studied for years. In high school, I got a chance to live in Rennes, France with a family for a week, as well as travel throughout France for two more weeks. I hope someday to temporarily live in that region of the world again. (And I say temporarily because, with the exception of perhaps Australia, the U.S. is the best country in the world!)
The wooden spoon or the belt? Those were the choices facing my brother and I if we dared to misbehave when we were young. My parents were immigrants to this country and, when it came to parenting, they resolved problems at home much the way their parents did. I don't remember them fighting over how it was done.
