About me

Although I write all kinds of articles at Helium I am actually an environmental management systems auditor, with a PhD in Zoology. Like all scientists I have a streak of the artist as well - some of my oil painting efforts are hidden in the house where not too many people can see them!

I love animals and especially cats whom I think are probably way ahead of humans on the road to self-enlightenment. At this stage I would like to see the seven natural wonders of the world. My picture shows me at number one - the Victoria Falls. One down, six to go...........

The Lacuna was first published in 2009. It won the Orange Prize in 2010.  This prize was created in 1996 and is awarded for excellence in women's fictional writing. The soft cover version runs to just over 500 pages but is an accessible and intriguing read - the perfect relaxation for those who prefer something more than light entertainment but not quite in the mood for gut-wrenching guilt or graphic violence (of which the bookshop shelves seem to be liberally supplied...).  Although an odd title for a book, especially since not many people know the meaning of the word,...
