R E "Gus" Payne is the winner of multiple awards from the Louisiana Press Association for Investigative Journalism. He is also the author of "Caught in the Crossfire", a non-fiction book that is the basis of the NBC-TV movie of the same name starring actor Dennis Franz, who portrays Payne in the movie.

Payne is perhaps better known for his international best-selling periodical "The Death of Brandon Lee: The Untold Story", the basis of a major segment on NBC-TV's "Unsolved Mysteries". Recently he has written "The End of All Diseases" and "Falsely Accused", the later delving into District Attorney Jim Garrison's investigation of the JFK assassination and also covering the "USA versus R E Payne".
Now retired, Payne was formerly a member of the board of directors of two graduate universities.
