About me - Blake Guthrie

About me

I'm an opinionated singer and guitarist with a writing problem.

I live in Decatur, GA-which means Atlanta to those of you outside of Georgia. Decatur is not really a suburb, per se, just a small town, older than Atlanta, and surrounded by it. I refuse to leave the city limits of Decatur unless I have to, because Atlanta traffic is a nightmare and the road rage is out of control.

I prefer to stay at home with my pets (two cats and a basset hound) and only get in my car to play a gig where the audience adores me. More realistically, I have to get in my car every day to go to work at a job that is beneath me as I try and make it as a writer and musician.
I rarely make a good first impression, because I'm quiet and reflective off-stage and in person, but those who have known me for a while think I'm a pretty cool, laid-back guy.

A long-time friend once said about me, "He's so laid-back he fell off."

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Great stories, writing, music, movies, food, travel and people-in that order.

I know too much about ...

Bruce Springsteen's songs and being alone in Italy when you shouldn't be.

My parents always told me ...

Dad: "Make a difference." Mom: "Get a job in your field." See how conflicted I am?

My childhood ambition ...

To be an astronomer, until I realized math was involved.

My favorite memory ...

Telling my father that my earliest memory was being placed by him in front of a glowing TV set when it was dark outside. My father responded that he woke me up from my crib and put me in front of the TV when man first landed on the moon. How cool is it that my first memory is the first moon landing, even though I didn't know it at the time?

Why I write ...

Because I'm vain.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

Classical music on my local NPR station.

My first job ...

Picking up golf balls on a golf range, as the owner told the golfers to hit the other direction from where I was picking up balls.

My best moment ...

Seeing those guys land on the moon and not knowing what the crap was going on. Nothing's changed much since then-I still don't know what the crap is going on.

My inspiration ...

Seeing people behave like idiots or a*#holes. It makes me check myself, to make sure I'm not behaving like them.

Entertainment > Music Genres, Trends & Scenes Is Bob Dylan a folk singer?Smallicon

If the title of this debate were "Does Bob Dylan consider himself a folk singer?" then I would be writing for the other side, because it is a well documented fact that Dylan hates labels. The label that raises his ire the most is being called the "voice of his generation." He's been known to spew venom back at interviewers who broach the subject.

But the truth is, labels need to be placed on things-including art-so that when history is written it can be organized, filed and future generations will have something to go on. Sometimes the future might not agree with what the past label...
