Beowulf is a pagan story recounted by a Christian poet, and as such contains both pagan and Christian elements. Beowulf upholds the pagan heroic code, as well as the tradition of vengeance for murdered kin. He also mentions fate throughout the story, a concept which is thoroughly pagan. However, Beowulf does make many references to God, and displays Christian brotherly love when he risks his life to aid King Hrothgar.
