The NHL's main competition for viewers is with the NBA. The NFL season wraps up right around the New Year which has the hockey and basketball seasons nearing their mid-points. When the playoffs of the NHL and NBA are unfolding, the only other major North American sport in play is baseball which by then is early in its season.
