Gout is a form of arthritis involving the deposition of uric acid crystals on the articular cartilage (cartilage layer on the surfaces of joints), tendons and in the surrounding tissue. As a consequence, the tissues of joints affected by gout become inflamed and swell, causing sudden, intense pain.
