About me - Eileen Swee Lian Goh

About me

I was born and raised in Singapore, and am currently based in the same island republic. An ethnic Chinese, I was raised in a "Peranakan" or Straits-born culture. Malay is my mother tongue, English, my first language in school; I can speak and understand basic Thai, and am trying to learn Japanese.

I've wanted to become a writer since the age of 10 years, after watching the Japanese television series, "The Space Giants" (also known as "Monsters from Outer Space" in certain countries). My favorite character in the series is the journalist/reporter/writer, "Ito Mura"; the actor who played this character was Masumi Okada. Mr. Okada was not only tall and good-looking, but witty and charismatic as well.

"Ito Mura" was always disciplined and professional in his work, and, in my writings, I have tried to follow in his footsteps. Mr. Okada was also someone who was often at the forefront of his field, and, in my life, I have always tried to be innovative in whatever I do.

I graduated from the National University of Singapore with a degree in medicine in 1983 and practised as a locum physician for 19 years after serving my internship. While preparing for my final-year examinations in medicine, I enrolled in a diploma course in writing and journalism at The Writing School (a British correspondence-course/distance-learning institute), completing the course a year later. I have written for Wikipedia and Imdb, and self-published a book.

Between October 1993 and April 1995, I was fortunate enough to be able to work in an Islamic conservation area in Singapore. The clinic - located within the grounds of a mosque - saw mostly Muslim patients from around the world, giving me the opportunity to learn and better understand the Islamic peoples.

I left the Singapore medical profession in 2004, and studied world history on my own for the next four years. I am particularly interested in the history and politics of the United States of America.

I am a member of the Colgate Worldwide Partners online community and the College of Family Physicians Singapore.
