I must be the only person in North America who never had green bean casserole. In my family, holidays always seemed to be about the glazed carrots and candied yams. Well, anyway. One of my favorite flavor combinations is that of green beans, bacon and tomatoes. With that in mind here's the recipe I put together.

1 lb green beans
1 white onion cut in half vertically,
sliced thin and separated into rings
1 28oz can stewed tomatoes
1/4 cup ham, finely chopped
1/2 tsp tarragon
1 bay leaf
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
3 tbsp bread crumbs
1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese
