The SEC has mandates for who can invest Hedge funds. The requirements are that the potential investor 1) have assets exceeding one million dollars; or 2) is a "sophisticated investor". This 'sophisticated investor' requirement is a fairly subjective one, so if you know a person associated with a hedge fund and you have investment experience, you could probably invest.
