Downloading music is ethical because of the following ancient commercial maxim: caveat emptor. I am an ardent believer in strong property rights and the free market, but these will only function as required if consumers operate with all available knowledge. At present, the music industry seems set up so as to deny consumers the knowledge they need to make informed decisions, and thereby to extract maximum revenue.
