About me - Quinn Blackburn

About me

I'm a mother of three, married for 20 years, writer, reader, and lover of Life. I do most of my writing at www.entwife.gather.com or www.epinions.com I have a wide variety of interests... camping, attending Renaissance festivals, concerts, Castle Blood, and other live performances. I am hopelessly addicted to the written word and believe that Music is a sacred experience. I will listen to just about any kind of music, and like books, have far too many favorites to name. Fantasy fiction is a favorite genre, but I'll read anything that catches my fancy.

I love the World and am endlessly fascinated by its beauty and bounty. I resist labels but consider myself a Pagan, and am comfortable with Green witch or simply Eclectic when discussing matters of religion. I believe it is more important to have Faith than Religion. I have been studying various religions and philosophies as far back as I can remember, which would be my first birthday. Ok, so I wasn't so into those topics then, but I Was practicing Yoga and meditation before I was enrolled in school, and the Eastern philosophies have had a huge influence on my life. I believe that Truth can be found everywhere though, and welcome learning in all it's forms.

There are many people who's words have inspired me over the years....

"I think the first virtue is to restrain the tongue; he approaches nearest to gods who knows how to be silent, even though he is in the right." ~ Cato the Elder

"There is only one way to achieve happiness on this terrestrial ball,
And that is to have either a clear conscience or none at all." ~Ogden Nash

"Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." ~Buddha

"No man was ever wise by chance." ~Seneca

"The cure for anything is salt water - sweat, tears, or the sea." ~Isak Dinesen

"Do what you know in your heart to be right, for you will be criticized anyway." Eleanor Roosevelt

"People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in their true beauty is revealed only if there is light from within." ~Elisabeth Kbler-Ross

Oh, Great Spirit
Whose voice I hear in the winds,
And whose breath gives life to all the world,
hear me, I am small and weak,
I need your strength and wisdom.
Let me walk in beauty and make my eyes ever behold
the red and purple sunset.
Make my hands respect the things you have
made and my ears sharp to hear your voice.
Make me wise so that I may understand the things
you have taught my people.
Let me learn the lessons you have
hidden in every leaf and rock.I seek strength, not to be greater than my brother,
but to fight my greatest enemy - myself.
Make me always ready to come to you
with clean hands and straight eyes.
So when life fades, as the fading sunset,
my Spirit may come to you without shame.

(translated by Lakota Sioux Chief Yellow Lark in 1887)
Earth, Teach Me

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and famous?" Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in all of us. And when we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others." ~ Maryanne Williamson

"Even nectar is poison if taken to excess." ~Hindu Proverb

What soap is to the body, laughter is to the soul. " ~Yiddish Proverb

"And forget not that the earth delights to feel your bare feet and the winds long to play with your hair."

"I have learned silence from the talkative, toleration from the intolerant, and kindness from the unkind; yet, strange, I am ungrateful to those teachers." ~Kahlil Gibran

So live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart.
Trouble no one about their religion;
respect others in their view, and demand that they respect yours.
Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life.

Seek to make your life long and its purpose in the service of your people.
Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide.
Always give a word or a sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend,
even a stranger, when in a lonely place.
Show respect to all people and grovel to none.

When you arise in the morning give thanks for the food and for the joy of living.
If you see no reason for giving thanks, the fault lies only in yourself.

Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools
and robs the spirit of its vision.

When it comes your time to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled
with the fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep
and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way.
Sing your death song and die like a hero going home.

Chief Tecumseh (Crouching Tiger) Shawnee Nation 1768-1813

Pity the Blind

"Pity the Blind!" Yes, pity those
Whom day and night enclose
In equal dark; to whom the sun's keen flame
And pitchy night-time are the same.

But pity most the blind
Who cannot see
That to be kind
Is life's felicity.

Richard Watson Gilder

In Life's name and for Life's sake, I say that I will use the Art for nothing but the service of that Life. I will guard growth and ease pain. I will fight to preserve what grows and lives well in its own way; and I will change no object or creature unless its growth and life, or that of the system of which it is part, are threatened. To these ends, in the practice of my Art, I will put aside fear for courage, and death for life, when it is right to do so - till Universe's end.
