I've always loved words-how they sound, how they are spelled, how they can be put together. Writing, for me, is an exploration of language as well as ideas.

One of the most inspiring teachers I have known was my 10th grade biology teacher, Miss Mecchia. It's hard to remember if I loved biology before that class, but I certainly loved it afterward. Miss Mecchia was known for her abundant, animated enthusiasm. A typical example of this was her method of teaching us the bones of the human skull. What could have been a boring memorization exercise came alive as a rap song! In sequence, she touched each bone on her head and recited, "Frontal! Parietal! Occipital!
