You have two real options when dressing on the cheap: unethical and ethical.

Unethical: Give your hard earned dollar/pound/drachma to a big chain who use underpaid, over worked foreign workers to make their dime-a-dozen, highly-fashionable, disposable clothing. Turn up at that all-important party wearing the exact same dress as your rival.
