About me

I am one of Helium's Channel Managers, assisting you in the Telephones Sub-Channel of the Computers and Technology Channel.

I'm what you call a "gadget geek." I'm one of those people who had tech before it became popular (example: I owned a first-generation Archos Jukebox 6000...don't know what that is? Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archos_Jukebox_series#Jukebox_6000). I also work in the industry, providing Support Engineering services for Fortune 100 companies.   Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), this keeps me relatively in the know when it comes to electronics, and more recently, cellular. I've run the gamut of providers (the only provider I haven't used is T-Mobile, but AT&T is GSM as well, so I have a good idea about the technology), so feel free to bounce any cell question off of me. If I don't have the answer right away, I can find it.

I've spent the last 13 years in the computer industry, doing everything from UNIX system administration, data center and personnel management, field support and technical support. I still love it. It still gets harder every day, but I can't see myself doing anything else.

I spend my off-hours with my family and my music. I'm a writer/composer/performer, and most recently a choir director for a local children's choir. I have Multiple Sclerosis, but it doesn't have me. :-)

Computers & Technology > Phone Technologies & Issues Will Apple's iPhone revolutionize mobile computing?

Time Magazine named the iPhone the "Invention Of The Year." They did so because they, like many others, believe that the iPhone does things that have never been done before in a cellular phone, and they simply love it. I like it very much as well, but it's far from revolutionary. And one only needs to look at history to see how this happens, and it is indeed happening again with the iPhone. More than ten years ago, Samsung created a portable music player called the Yepp YP-D40, which Creative Labs bought and re-branded the NOMAD. It had 64 MB of solid-state internal memory and is widely cr...
