About me

I am one of Helium's Site Stewards, assisting you in the Telephones Sub-Channel of the Computers and Technology Channel.

I'm what you call a "gadget geek." I'm one of those people who had tech before it becomes popular (example: I owned a first-generation Archos Jukebox 6000 [don't know what that is? Check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archos_Jukebox_series#Jukebox_6 000]). Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it), this keeps me relatively in the know when it comes to electronics, and more recently, cellular. I've run the gamut of providers (the only provider I haven't used is T-Mobile, but AT&T is GSM as well, so I have a good idea about the technology), so feel free to bounce any cell question off of me. If I don't have the answer right away, I can find it.

I've spent the last 13 years in the computer industry, doing everything from UNIX system administration, data center and personnel management, field support and technical support. I still love it. It still gets harder every day, but I can't see myself doing anything else.

I spend my off-hours with my family and my music. I'm a writer/composer/performer, and most recently a choir director for a local children's choir. I have Multiple Sclerosis, but it doesn't have me. :-)

Our first instinct in this country is to turn to "new laws" to correct the poor behavior of other people. That's okay; laws are designed to protect us from the poor choices of others. However, the knee-jerk reaction of "ban it!" should be tempered with common sense and logic.

There is no need for a new law specifically regarding speaking on cell phones. We already have laws in this country prohibiting "distracted driving," and they are effective. Distracted driving is an offense which includes many different kinds of distracting behaviors, including eating, reading books or newspap...
