Though some of the "iPod" generation use their personal music devices to avoid active communication, a lot more use them to avoid passive communication.

Passive communication, white noise, white knowledge that comes from walking down a busy street. Snatches of conversation from people you will only see that once, drunken cries and the request to do surveys.

Unless the music (or podcast/radio play/plans for world domination) is at such a volume the listener wouldn't notice a trunk horn before it ran them over, it does not drown out all the sounds around them.
