I think the best place to travel on any sort of a budget is to a state/national park. You could stay in your own state or travel to another one via car and still stay under a $500 budget easily, even with a family of four. Of course, staying in a state/national park does require a tent or KOA with Kabins or a park with cabins. The greatest thing about staying in a state/national park is that all of the activities within the park are free.
