I am a native of Long Island, NY, where I came of age somewhere between Sputnik and the first Space Shuttle. After studying Marketing and Advertising at Hofstra University and the City U. of New York, I relocated to the South. I am a Unitarian Universalist and the proud mother of a college student.
My lifelong interests include the ebb and flow of pop culture, including books, TV, film, rock n' roll, advertising and long-term trends. Hobbies include fanfic writing. Career highlights have taken place mostly in various office settings in three states, but there have been a surprising number of adventures amidst the tedium.

A dog can certainly give a homeowner an enhanced sense of security, but in my opinion, that should not be the primary reason for adopting one. If security is your sole aim, an alarm system would incur a comparable cost to dog ownership (installation vs. vaccinations; monthly service charges vs. monthly food and vet bills, etc.). An alarm system can be programmed to respond to a limited set of conditions - something trips the motion sensor. A window is forced open. Smoke is detected. When the alarm sounds, you know one of these has taken place. True, the smoke could be your toaster. A child...
