Retired after 41 years of working as a steelworker, both in the mill and for the United Steelworkers of America in Pittsburgh, PA, I now reside in my original home of Ashland, KY.
I married my childhood sweetheart whom I started dating in 1958, the beautiful Betty Lee O'Neal. We have two children and four grandchildren (three of whom are in our swimming pool at this writing). The eldest, 15 yr. old Clay, is undoubtedly somewhere with a beautiful girl. Baseball season is over and he is free at last!
I worked on my education while working full-time in the mill and was fortunate enough to earn my BBA and MBA from Morehead State University in Morehead, KY. I received my Ph.D. from The Union Institute University, of Cincinnati, OH, on my fiftieth birthday, in 1995. I am now getting close to 62. I am also a Certified Management Accountant, which comes in handy with my son who works for a CPA firm in our town.
I took up writing just about a year ago and am working on a novel entitled Me and The Mean Thirteen. It is about me and the guys I grew up with through high school and college years. We are all still close and had a reunion in Charleston, SC in May 2007. Two of the original 13 have died and we miss them very much.
I Am Now 63 and Unfettered. Finally, at the approach of my 63rd birthday I realized that nobody-wife, children, friends, grandchildren, etc.-really cared what I say or do. This realization had a wonderful affect on my life. I really used to get hurt (maybe insulted is a better word?) when I would be trying to advise one of my grandchildren on some area of life, sometimes just on their homework, and they would suddenly answer their cells and enter another world . . . or, often someone else would simply talk over me, and my sage advice would go sailing into space. For all intents and purpose...
