1793, this was the year which Eli Whitney invented the Cotton gin. The cotton gin is a machine that was used to separate the cotton fibers from the cotton seeds that were picked in the slave days. It was invented as it was much quicker and more efficient than doing it by hand. Once the seeds had been used they were used again for more cotton unless they were badly damaged, then they were disposed of. The word gin is an abbreviation of the word 'engine' and means device.
