As a student of philosophy, I have at one point spent the better part of a year studying Plato's cave analogy, along with my fellow students and several teachers as well as other interested parties. Eventually, after much arguing, pain, and resentment for the "dead Greek dude" as one of my classmates called him, we came to a consensus as to the meaning of each of the images in the cave. I will assume in this summary that the reader is aware of Plato's general theories presented in The Republic. The "prisoners" we see in the cave are a metaphor for those without knowledge, as they are held ...
