Cornelia Funke, pronounced FOON-kah, is an internationally acclaimed children’s book author. Funke has been called Germany’s J.K. Rowling. She was born in Dorsten, Westphalia, in Central Germany in 1958. At the age of 18, Funke went to Hamburg University and earned a degree in education theory. She worked for three years as a social worker in an educational project where she met many children from deprived backgrounds that clearly would later influence her writing.
