Sojourner Truth was her own self-given name. She was born into slavery as Isabella Baumfree in about 1797. She gave herself the new name in 1843. Her parents were James and Elizabeth Baumfree, and she was one of thirteen children. They were slaves of a Colonel Hardenbergh, in New York. Sojourner spoke Dutch, like most slaves at the time. She was sold several times and suffered much hardship. Sometime in 1815, she fell in love with another slave, Richard. Her owner forbade the relationship, since Richard did not belong to him.
