There is no identity in Judaism apart from God. To claim that one is a "Cultural Jew", while denying the absolute influence of a Jewish God on that culture, is absurd.

If one is an Atheist, (despite the Biblical claim that "The fool has said in his heart, there is no God") I would tend to think that attending any form of religious gathering, whether that happens to be Shabbat services or listening to a Rabbi lecture during the High Holidays would also be absurd.
