It's funny but I have a very clear memory of visiting Angkor Wat yet I know for a fact that I have never been outside the continental United States. I recall walking through a forest and coming across a large, crumbling temple. It was late afternoon and I was alone, surrounded by darkening jungle and echoing birdcall. I climbed the rounded steps of a small temple and, once I reached the top, I sat by a carved figure of a grotesque "birdman".
