NAVITA(Navita Gunter), an African American, Cherokee poet, storyteller and writer, was born in Fort Campbell, Kentucky and raised in Guthrie, Kentucky. I am a graduate of Western Kentucky University. In college, I debuted creatively as an alto singer in the Amazing Tones of Joy Choir. Later, while married I confronted domestic violence. This silenced my creativity for a moment. Nothing could stop my spirit though. Consequently, I am a survivor, discovering strength and healing in my poetry, It was a haven of expression and self-discovery. My earlier work spoke of loneliness. then I evolved into a fiery literary voice of activism against domestic violence. I want: "people to know that they are not alone in their suffering." Along with my poetry about social issues, I writes about the lives of black people. From participating in My Sister's House, (a safe house for battered women) prolifically writing and reciting at poetry venues, Navita reaches many people. Since November 1997, I has hosted a weekly open-mic poetry night at Kijiji Coffee House in the historical Jefferson Street community. Also, due to articles and photographs as well as numerous local TV and radio appearances, many people have heard of her. In Nashville, she recited at Vanderbilt University's First Amendment Center, Tennessee State University's Writer's Harvest Group, Sankofa Museum, Kijiji Coffee House, The Spot, Cleveland Street Baptist Church, the Domestic violence Candlelight Program in Franklin TN and at the Jubilee's Restaurant showcase of talent, and others. She's a member of Creative Artists of Tennessee (C.A.T.'s) and Tennessee Writers Alliance (TWA)., both organizations of cultural and social concerns. Navita lives and works in Nashville. She's a single mother of one daughter and just recently she is a survivor of cancer. Currently, she's working on her first book entitled "Letters To My Sister" which addresses her fight with Cervical Cancer.

Dating in this day and time has become so complicated I say this because a lot of people especially young people do not know what it is to have a relationship. In my observance and listening to couple's talk I have heard some interesting things on why they are with whom they are with or why the man in their life it there. Some women even boost about how they can get men to "do whatever" they want to them to do by teasing or playing helpless. I do not agree with this I think you should be honest and first "know yourself" meaning that you should be secure in knowing who you are and you shoul...
