About me - Doug Mcmillan

About me

Where to begin? Well, at the tender age of thirteen my father introduced me to Yoga classes where an expansion of consciousness took place as the Kundalini Shakti (divine life energy) was awoken and became active within my total system. Yoga and meditation changed my perception of my "self" and the whole of life.

Although I did not continue going to yoga classes after my first full year, I did continue with its practice at home, but eventually (over the years) meditation and self-knowledge became the focal point of my life. That said, in my thirties I could sit inverted in the full lotus position whilst contemplating the meaning of life the universe and everything.

During those years, my twenties and thirties, I discovered and studied the work of many great men. For example the work of Krishnamurti had a profound effect on me as did the teachings of Barry Long, although it must be said that I never took on a Master as such. I was always looking for the "Truth" whatever that might be, rather than simply becoming "attached" to another belief system or individual teacher/teaching. I wasn't looking for a guru or psychological/emotional crutch . . . I desired the truth of life with a burning desire so strong that nothing could prevent it from unfolding in my life.

Now in my 49th year I enjoy writing about and discussing such subjects as truth, reality and the meaning or purpose of life on earth.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Self-knowledge.

I know too much about ...

I know nothing . . . except what I need to know, when I need to know it.

My parents always told me ...

Eat your spinach it'll give you strength!

My childhood ambition ...

To simply be and enjoy life. I could never understand why everything had to be so complicated in the adult world. Now I know why!

My favorite memory ...

Being alone with nature in the woodlands where I lived as a child.

Why I write ...

To express self-knowledge.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

Anything that helps to bring enlightenment into existence!

My first job ...

In the Civil Service. I was a Clerical Assistant working on benefit claims and spent seven years there.

My best moment ...

Sitting in meditation and realising the simple clarity & joy of "Being", which is this eternal moment, the here and now . . . free from discursive thought!

My inspiration ...

Without doubt my inspiration is the "Greater Integrity" of the enlightened state of "Being", which is a greater integrity than the conditioned personality/self.

Religion & Spirituality > Spiritual Insights Enlightenment explained

Enlightenment is a state of Being beyond the thinking mind where there are no more psychological or emotional problems, fears, doubts or worries. It is the end of suffering or unhappiness. It is not to be confused with the so called age of enlightenment, which was a purely historical period/movement, and lets face facts here, it did not bring us to a new age of enlightenment did it? If it did why on earth is there so much psychological and emotional pain, suffering and unhappiness still on this blessed earth? So, the enlightened state of Being is one where I am no longer in a "condition" o...
