It really all boils down to spit on a thumb. Spit on a thumb? Well, my mother seemed to think that absolutely any mess on me could be cleaned up by spitting on her thumb and scrubbing me with it vigorously. This was just one of my mother's oddities that made it onto my mental list of "Things Never to Do When I Have Children". It was a very comprehensive list... I continued to add to it throughout my childhood and adolescence.
