People put a lot of stock in marriage. It is understood that the married couple understand each others wishes, have worked threw things together in many aspects of life and is allowed to make the ultimate decision if for some reason one because incapacitated. They also have the financial benefits of tax breaks, being able to carry each other on their employment benefits and rights to each others property. None of this is true for non-married couples.
