Once every week, my computer goes through a little "ritual". A program starts automatically that scans my hard disk for viruses. It slows down my computer somewhat, but I don't mind that too much. What really bothers me is that this "ritual", which is intended for security of my computer, should be totally unnecessary. There are much better ways of doing what this "ritual" is doing. I shouldn't need software to scan my hard disk just to detect and recover from security incidents that would be very easy to prevent, if I had a suitably-designed operating system for my desktop computer.
