What you see as a decline in courage, I see as an increase in wisdom. On 9/11 the American people had been lied to, and at that point in time very few knew better than to go along with what they were being told. People are beginning to look at the facts, rather than just take the word of CNN, or Fox news. Its a fact that when people are angry, or upset, they are unable to think rationally about issues.
