Born in Middlesborough in 1929 working class. Happy childhood, poor and underpriviledged, but did not know it.
Same in the war years, rationed and in danger, but did not know that either.
Apprenticed as a jockey, got too heavy for flat racing.
Army, missed second world war,got out just as my battalion was going to Korea. welter weight boxing champion of battalion.
Rode as a steeplechase jockey, worked with horses of all kinds, even a bit as cowboy in Montana.
Have done all sort of sport. Did freefall parachute for my 60th birthday, and another for my 70th like to paint, and write, for my own pleasure. only average at both.

My parents, though a sergeant in the army gave me my best thought when one of my friends complaind on 20 mile route march carrying full pack. he said " when you are marching you aint fighting.
